Shell, BP Yet to Meet Abu Dhabi $2.2 Billion Sign-On Fee
By Summer Said and Sarah Kent
Nearly two months after Abu Dhabi set a deadline to bid on one of the last big oil concessions in the Middle East, Royal Dutch Shell PLC and BP PLC haven't met the emirate's demand of a $2.2 billion sign-on fee, Abu Dhabi officials said.
Their reluctance raises the prospect that the world's largest oil companies--reeling from low oil prices--will lose access to some of the biggest fields in the oil-rich Gulf nation. Exxon Mobil Corp. has already walked away from the concession after the companies' 75-year license expired last January.
BP and Shell remain contenders for a new 40-year contract, but are locked in a standoff over the terms. After Total SA of France agreed in late January to a $2.2 billion sign-on fee for a 10% interest in a concession covering 15 onshore fields, Abu Dhabi demanded the same terms from BP and Shell and set a 10-day deadline, which came and went.
